Does Youth of May have GOOD or BAD ending?
I LOVE Lee Do Hyun. Recently, i've been watching all of his shows or film and i literally going through that phase where you just collecting all information about your celebrity crushes on the internet 24/7 lol. All i think about is him right now lmao. I think this obsession i have started when me and my friends talking about some korean drama that we've been watching, and i suddenly told them that i've been meaning to watch this korean drama call '18 Again' that starred with Lee Do Hyun.
The reason i wanna watch this 18 Again is because i actually have seen the original america film version of it. Though the film was a bit cringy, i actually really like the plot of someone in the middle age crisis became 18 version of himself again and try to live and learn for his mistake. I would love to make a review of 18 Again because damn, this is a really good drama. The adaptation in the korean version is really good and oh my god Lee Do Hyun kill the role as well.
Anyway, my point is, i've been in love with him since i watch 18 Again. This love was to big, that i immidiately browse for all of his work that he's ever done lol. And then i found this drama call 'Youth of May'. This drama is about a love between an illegal child of the anticommunist figure and a girl whos living her best live to support her family financial problem and achive her dream which is get a scholarship to a foreign country. This story take place in Gwanju korea 1980 when there is a rebellion that was going on and mass murder by the soldier because they can't spot the difference between a rebel and just a regular person they ended up murdering so many innocent one.
Lee Do Hyun is playing a role as Hwang He Tee, he has a cheerfull character at the outside cause he's looking like a character that don't have any problem in live but actually he has a pretty dark background and a traumatic experience. Like i said before, his dad is an anticommunist figure who treat people like an object not to exclude his son as well. Being the illegitimate son that he is, he exclude himself from the family in Gwangju and being a college medical student in Seoul and known for the student with the highest passing exam in Seoul University.
At that time rebellion was everywhere in korea. Activist especially college student are the one who take the lead to make some changes in the country. In that college years, Lee do hyun as hwang he tee has a friend who was a part of activist that always bring someone who's hurt due to the rebellion that they did. He can't bring his friend to the hospital because the police and soldier would definitely caught them so he bring his hurting friend to hwang he tee instead. But one day, he bring his girlfriend at the threshold of her death to hwang he tee while drenched in blood. It was obvious that his girlfriend is far from okay, and hwang he tee failed to save her and put her in a crisis condition. That accident left a traumatic experince in hwang he tee and he's unable to consider himself as a doctor since then.
Hwang he tee continue his life in seoul while making money by sell everything he had to pay his friend's girlfriend treatment in the hospital. His friend went to army and hwang he tee is the one whos gonna take care of her. One day, his friend's girlfriend wish to go back to her hometown which is Gwangju. And that was the start of hwang he tee's meeting with his love of his life in May at Gwangju.
Life in gwangju is not easy for Hwang he tee. Because he have to go back to his family while being unfairly treated by his stepmother who have a son who is still in elementary school. He knows that his family dispise his wellbeing especially his stepmother, i mean i don't blame her cause who could love a son of his husband's affair. But that doesn't stop hwang he tee to make his friend's girlfriend wish come true. So he came to gwangju's hospital and ask if he can transferred a crisis patient from seoul to gwanju. The procedure seems to be complicated than expected and the administration fee is really expensive. So, hwang he tee put his dignity aside to ask his father money for the administration transfer fee and his father agree to do that with one condition. He have to be engaged to one of his father political alliance to expand his influence more as an anticommunist figure in gwangju. With a heavy heart he accept the condition and agree to meet with his future fiance on their first date.
His 'future' fiance who name is Lee Soo-ryeon is actually a rebellious kid who lead a rebellion activist in Gwangju. She's a really tomboy girl who have a lot of sympathy to make a change at the korea at that time. And obviously hearing that she have to get into a date to his future fiance was something happen occasionally, so as usual she ask Kim Myung-hee the main girl of this story and her very best friend to pretend to be her at that date in exchange a plane ticket to go pursue her dream school at the germany at that time. Kim Myung-hee is a financially poor girl and a very hard working person. Her dream is to get a scholarship in foreign country in order to escape his family cause her family problem is not good, she has a very bad relationship with his dad, so at that time Myung-hee is actually already got the scholarship but she didn't have the money to buy the airplane ticket. And that's the story how Hwang He-tee meet Kim Myung-Hee, a completely different background but turn into the most romantic story that happen between them.
I don't want to spoiler the ending of this story, but if you know you know. Some people known this drama for having a "bad" ending. But i think this ending is beautifully good. This is one of the best k-drama ending that i watch for a long time. I still have the lingering feeling after finished this drama. To anime lovers if a want to compare the feeling that i get after watching this show is the same as after i watch a lie in april but trust me, is the best feeling. So, don't be afraid to watch this show cause the rumored ending, even though you got a spoiler of the ending is still worth to watch, cause what's important is you will learn something for it.
